The Pope is a Retard
Again… another title that should speak for itself, but I’m going to write something under this one too. Feel free to stop reading now… you already have the gist of it.
The Pope, completely disregarding the well-being of Africans sweltering in the AIDS-ridden desert, completely disregarding the rights of women not to have 18 children, praised the Catholic ban of condoms.
That’s not what I want to pick at. It’s old news–tragic news, but old. You’ve heard that rant millions of times.
What I do want to pick at is the reason why he’s jizzing on his ruby red slippers over the condom ban:
What was true yesterday remains true even today.
- Pope Benedict XVI
Here’s some stuff that was “true” yesterday:
- Earth is flat.
- The stars, sun (not a star), moon and planets go around Earth affixed to crystal spheres.
- The moon gives off its own light.
- The sky is a solid firmament.
- Earth was created on Sunday 23 October 4004 BCE.
- If not enough virgin and enemy blood is spilled on the Aztec Pyramid of the Sun in every 52-year cycle, the sun won’t rise and the gods will die.
- All diseases and maladies are caused by bad bile, bad blood, black magic, gods, demons and djnns.
- The waves are caused by Poseidon and Neptune churning the seas.
- The whole of Earth was created by an egg hatching on a wizard’s knee as he lay in an infinite plan of water.
According to the Pope, all this is true today! It was true then, it must be true now.
Tradition does not create fact.

I am just reminded of this sign (placed illegally on a bus stop) with a bible quote about jesus being the same yesterday/today/forever. I go past it every and everyday all I can think “So none-existant or do you mean dead?”

I can understand why you are unhappy with the pope but do you have to do it at the expense of people living with mental retardation? When you put down the Pope, you’ve got the Catholic League to stand up for him. When you put down people with special needs who can’t defend themselves, you cross the line and become a bully.
You probably don’t have a member of your family with special needs. You probably don’t know that kids like my daughter who lives with cognitive impairment, understand and get your joke about them. It’s not okay to take away someone’s dignity with a casual remark. When you do, you also become as tone deaf.
Thanks for listening.

H Jacobs, perhaps you’re the retard!
I wasn’t joking about retarded people at all. I was joking about the Pope. Had you read anywhere past the title, you would have realised that.
Retarded is a perfectly acceptable word to most non-retards. Just accept it and move on with your life. There are too many abnormalities, syndromes and diseases that leave people cognitively and emotionally crippled to refer to individually. Thus we use the blanket term “retarded”. It’s not bad. It just means slow.
Oh… one last thing. I’m gay. People like you who forced the school systems to start punishing the use of the word “retard” as if it were a vulgar word made children start looking for a new insulting word to put in its place. They chose the word gay.
Now all I ever hear is, “Dude, the Coke machine took my change. That’s so gay.” “My computer’s being gay. It won’t stop crashing.” “You didn’t bring the beer? You’re so gay!”
You know what I do when I hear that? Do I hike up my britches, adjust my suspenders, push my glasses up my nose and complain? No. I ignore it. These people are just normal people and many of them are my friends. There’s no reason to make a fuss over them using the word gay. It’s not their fault. In school, they were taught not to use the word “retarded” in the same sense they now use “gay”. I don’t blame them at all. I blame you. Thanks a lot, asshole, for shifting the making fun of retards, people who often don’t understand it, to the making fun of gays, people who always do. Gays were already being harassed and insulted, in greater numbers and in more deadly ways than retards, before people like you banned the word “retard” and sent the kids rushing for “gay”, the new all-purpose insult.
I should also add that this P.C. war against the word “retard” that made children adopt “gay” instead happened right about the time we began to fight for marriage rights and has really hurt us politically.
I’m sorry you let political correctness get the best of you because you used to use the word “retard” in high school until you grew up and had a retard child of your own, then, hypocritically, you decided to take up their cause out of guilt. But next time you want to bitch and mope about oppression and mockery, don’t do it to a gay Atheist Jew in the American South. You have no fucking clue what oppression is.

I understand that having a label attached to your child and then used as a derogatory is insulting. So stop attaching the word to your child.
The Pope is a Retard doesn’t mean that the pope has autism or is dealing with ADHD. It means that the guy is a fuckstick who is mentally deranged and is choosing to believe in an invisible sky fairy who prefers that people get AIDS and have children they can’t care for rather than prevent a god-ordained birth.
The word “retard” only has power to offend you personally if you let it.
Aussies call Americans “sepos”. Do you know why? Originally we were Yankees. Then Yanks. Then Septic Tanks (’cause it rhymes and we’re full of shit) and now just “sepos”. Does the term bother me? Nope. Know why? Because I don’t personalize it and take it as an insult. Who fucking cares?????? Am I a septic tank? Nope. Might be full of shit. Not even technically a Yankee in the sense of the New England area of the country.
Your son isn’t retarded. He might be mentally challenged, socially immature, autistic or whatever his diagnosis is. He’s only “retarded” if YOU say he is.
Mean kids: “Look at the retard.” (pointing at your son).
Your son: “Look a herd of elephants.” (pointing at the mean kids).
Mean kids: “We’re not elephants.”
Your son: “And I’m not retarded.”
In fact didn’t African Americans take this to the next level with embracing the word “nigger”???? hmmmmm Something else for you to consider. Do you think we’ll see the day when they are carrying posters that says “retards unite!”? Good for them if we ever do.

Fiery, I’m still trying to figure out how you could make my same argument in a nice way. This “nice” thing… is it easy?

Heh. Executive summary: “Calling the Pope a retard is an insult to retards.” I’m pretty sure that’s what this all comes to … No argument from me!

Heh…this whole “argument” reminds me of a favorite quote of mine from Eleanor Roosevelt –
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
Hmmm.

Reed- lol
Nup! In fact it can give you stomach ulcers suppressing all that frustration. Yours made me laugh but I didn’t know if he would. Thought I’d try the rational angle on the same topic. Bet it doesn’t dent him though. Parents of special children really latch on to the offensiveness of the “r” word.
