The real saying is “You can’t polish a turd.” It’s usually used to refer to continued work on a product that is known to be terrible, and likely will never be good. Because even if you polish that turd to a healthy shine, it’s still crap, and nobody is going to want it.

The comment is “You can’t polish a turd.”, which basically means it’s better to be a diamond in the rough, because you can’t polish a turd.. aka.. If it’s shit, it’s just shit no matter what you try to do to it.
